Note: The Performa 6360 and the Performa 6400 Series computers require special adjustments to run this course (see sections below on Adobe Acrobat Reader™ and Memory Issues). If you do not want to make such adjustments, we recommend that you run the course on computers other than these.

Installing Adobe Acrobat™ Reader
In order to fully utilize the features of this course, you must install the version of Adobe Acrobat™ Reader that comes with this CD. Below are additional notes about installing and using Acrobat Reader with this course. For more detailed information on Acrobat™ Reader system requirements and installation issues, see the README.TXT file located inside the Acrobat Installer folder on the CD.
If you have not already done so, we recommend that you return to the MOST 1.0 CD and run the Acrobat Installer located in the Acrobat Installer folder. This version includes the special plug-in required to complete exercises in this course. The Acrobat Installer installs Acrobat Reader 2.1 in a folder called Adobe Acrobat on your startup drive.
The Performa 6360 and the Performa 6400 Series computers are shipped with pre-installed software applications, including Acrobat Reader 2.1. Since this pre-installed version does not include certain features, you will not be able to complete some exercises and printing in MOST. If you want to run MOST on one of these Performas, you must discard the pre-installed version of Acrobat Reader and install the version supplied on the MOST 1.0 CD. To do this:
1. Go to the Controls Panel under the Apple Menu.
2. Select General Controls.
3. De-select the box for Protect Applications Folder, and close General Controls. This
instantly unlocks the Applications folder.
4. Drag the Adobe Acrobat folder from the Applications folder to the Trash. You must choose
Empty Trash from the Special menu before launching the new version of Acrobat Reader.
5. Install Adobe Acrobat with the installer supplied on the MOST 1.0 CD.
To replace the Acrobat Reader button (alias) in Launcher:
1. Remove the old Acrobat button (alias) by holding the Option key down and dragging the
button to the Trash. Choose Empty Trash from the Special menu.
2. Create a new alias by dragging the icon of the newly installed Acrobat Reader 2.1 to the
Launcher window. Your system automatically creates a new button (alias).

AppleScript®
If you are running System 7.1 (which did not ship with AppleScript®), you must install AppleScript 1.1 (included on this CD) to ensure that the printing options in the course function correctly.
To install AppleScript 1.1, open the AppleScript Installer folder on the MOST 1.0 CD and double-click on the AppleScript Installer icon. Follow the directions on the screen.

Memory Issues
Performa 6360 and Performa 6400 Series: Set Extensions Manager to run 7.5 extensions only. This will make memory available that would otherwise be cached for the numerous extensions pre-installed on the computers in this series.
Power Macintosh 8500 and 9500 Series: Set display to 256 colors to avoid memory problems.

About the Technical Information Library (TIL)
The TIL is available through a number of services. The TIL on the Service Source Companion CD includes more than 15,000 technical support articles. We have included a subset of articles about Macintosh software on this CD to use during the practice sessions. Before you can search and read these articles you will need to install
- Acrobat Reader 2.1
- Search Index (Macintosh SW Index.pdx) for the technical support articles included on this CD.
Note: In order to load and use the search index, you must use the version of Acrobat Reader contained on the MOST 1.0 CD. Other versions of Acrobat Reader are not "plug-in enabled," which means they cannot utilize search indexes and other features.
On 680x0 machines, you must have at least 12 MB of RAM to access the Technical Information Library index while MOST is open. If you have 8 MB installed RAM, you can increase it to 12 MB using the Virtual Memory setting in the Memory control panel. Power Macintoshes need 18 MB of RAM, at least 16 of which must be installed RAM.

Loading the Acrobat TIL Search Index From the MOST 1.0 CD
After installing Acrobat, you must load the correct TIL search index. This index is named Macintosh SW Index.pdx and is located at the top level of the TIL folder on the MOST CD. Follow these steps to load the index:
1. Scroll to the bottom of the MOST window to see the TIL folder.
2. Launch Acrobat Reader 2.1. The easiest way to do this is to launch the document
titled "Search Instructions" located at the top level of the TIL folder.
3. Click the Search icon in the Acrobat toolbar. This icon depicts a pair of binoculars
with a document in the background.
Note: If you have previously searched Service Source on your system, the MOST 1.0 CD will eject and a dialog box will ask you to insert Service Source. Dismiss the dialog box and reinsert the MOST 1.0 CD.
4. Click the Indexes... button. At the "Available Indexes" screen, click the Add button.
5. Navigate to Macintosh SW Index.pdx in the TIL folder and click Open (or double-click
on the index title). Then click OK.
The search index is now loaded and selected. You can now search the TIL articles by entering your search text in the Acrobat Search window and clicking the Search button.
Note: For tips about effectively searching the TIL, we recommend that you read the Acrobat document "Search Instructions" located at the top level of the TIL folder.

Known Printing Issues
The MOST 1.0 CD includes many job aids that are designed to be printed while you are using the course. These job aids are in two formats -- SimpleText files and Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files -- and can be printed by clicking on the customized print button within the course.
You must have at least 12 MB of RAM to print the Acrobat job aids while the course is open. If you have 8 MB of RAM, you can increase it to 12 MB using the Virtual Memory setting in the Memory control panel. Power Macintoshes need 18 MB of RAM, at least 16 of which must be installed RAM.
If your system is not able to run Virtual Memory and you have less than 12 MB of RAM, take the following steps to print the job aids:
1. Quit the course (use the Quit button or command-q).
2. Scroll to the folder titled Acrobat Docs on the MOST 1.0 CD and open it.
3. Select all of the Acrobat job aids by holding down the Shift key and clicking on each of the
document icons.
4. Choose Print from the File menu. Click the Print button at each dialog box.
5. When printing is finished, quit Acrobat by pressing command-q and relaunch the course by
double-clicking on the MOST icon.
Note: Only 8 MB of RAM are needed to print SimpleText job aids or screen images.
You can print a screen by selecting Print from the File menu or by using command-p.
If you print a screen, you have to select the landscape (horizontal) orientation at the
Print dialog box in order to print the full screen image.

Known Issues With Acrobat Reader and QuickDraw GX
Acrobat Reader 2.1 installs substitution fonts appropriate to your system configuration at the time of installation. Later, if you either enable or disable QuickDraw GX, you will need to reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.1 to ensure that the correct versions of the fonts required by Acrobat Reader 2.1 are installed in their proper locations.
If you installed System 7.5 and QuickDraw GX after installing Acrobat Reader 2.1, you must reinstall Acrobat Reader 2.1. The QuickDraw GX installer replaces ATM 3.8.3 with ATM GX (ATM 3.7), which is not compatible with Acrobat Reader 2.1. (The QuickDraw GX 1.1 installer includes ATM 3.8.3, so using that installer does not cause a problem.)
Note: If QuickDraw GX is enabled on your system, you MUST turn on desktop printing in order to print from Acrobat Reader 2.1.
For more information on special installation issues with QuickDraw GX and Acrobat Reader, consult the README.TXT file located in the Acrobat Installer folder on the CD.
